Snoring occurs when there is a vibration of the uvula and the soft palate, which thus gives rise to a sound which can vary from a soft noise to a loud and unpleasant one. This device is worn while you sleep, like a mask, and has a small pump which provides a continuous air flow into the airway, which forces it to remain open. Snoring can cause many problems. Pregnancy, as any woman whos been pregnant will tell you, isnt all about glowing and waiting patiently for a baby to come. There are lots of discomforts a pregnant woman feels physically. During the third trimester things can get really bad. Its during the third trimester that all those frequent toilet trips start and of course you never feel like youve had enough sleep as you struggle to keep up with your usual routine. However when you do manage to catch forty winks, there is something you should watch out for that you may have never considered before: loud snoring.
Becoming a Snorer
Women who do not normally snore or suffer from loud snoring may find themselves suddenly snoring during pregnancy. One of the causes of snoring is a lack of sleep or an irregular sleep pattern. Lets face it; most pregnant women will suffer from either or both of these causes during pregnancy, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy. Because of this, a woman who does not normally snore may suddenly find herself suffering from snoring, even loud snoring.
Statistics show that 30% of pregnant women will find themselves snoring during pregnancy. Besides irregular sleep patterns, pregnancy itself may result in snoring. A mothers growing abdomen and the uterus pressing on the diaphragm makes it difficult to breath, particularly during sleep and will cause snoring. Pregnant women may also snore because of nasal congestion.
Dangerous Snoring
Although snoring may be dismissed as an annoyance; it can be dangerous, especially in pregnant women. Loud snoring may be a warning sign that there is a larger problem at hand. Loud snoring is definitely dangerous if a pregnant woman finds that her snoring is coupled with sleepiness during the daytime, headaches and swollen legs. These symptoms indicate that a pregnant woman could be suffering from hypertension, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction.
Women who snore during pregnancy have a greater risk of the above diseases than women who do not snore during pregnancy. Snoring can also starve the fetus of oxygen. It seems almost implausible but snoring during pregnancy could result in the growth retardation of the fetus as well as maternal death; snoring is a danger to both mother and child during pregnancy. As a precaution and safeguard women who find themselves snoring, especially if it is loud snoring, during pregnancy should see their doctor about it.
